Year 5 and 6 Blog

Friday 2nd October 2015

Welcome to our first blog!

We would like to tell you about some of the things we have been learning about this week.

In Literacy we were talking all about the play Hamlet by Shakespeare. We were also discussing the characters and what roles they played, lots of murdering and fighting!

Now we take you to Numeracy! In our lessons we were learning how to solve problems using long division... Plus, we taught others how to do long multiplication. :)

On Tuesday before lunch we were doing French, in which we were learning how to pronounce the French alphabet... Commando style! Basically, we had to copy a solider singing the French alphabet.

The highlight on Wednesday was Science. We were making basic circuits in series and then adapting themto make them even more interesting!!

At the end of this week we wrote an amazing play of Hamlet... In the 21st century. Most of us did an alternative fighting scene at the end of the story. It was so much fun!!

On Tuesday we enjoyed rewriting a Native American traditional story called Magic Arrows. We used direct speech and indirect speech in our version of the story. Everyone was interested in our task so completed it well.

Most of us enjoyed playing a game to do with rounding. Some of us were doing round to 10,100 and 1000. We had to choose 4 or 3 or 2 digit numbers depending on what we were comfortable with.
In science we made webs to show what we know about space which is our science topic. Most of us already knew quite a lot about space. We really can't wait to explore further information about this interesting topic!
This week we have found out what our studies project is. We are learning all about longitude, latitude, North Pole, South Pole, equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn. The other thing we are learning about is the America's which is linked with our literacy about traditional tales. The whole subject is called Leaps of Latitude.
This week we have been learning about Hockey. Every lesson we warm up with a couple of laps around the playground, then we get on with Hockey!
In partners we jog with our ball and pass it to each other on the way to the goal; or in our case, the end of the playground.  We've learnt to run with, dribble with and hold the Hockey sticks. Most of use have loved this and would enjoy doing this subject again.
